Democratic Socialists of America Boise General Meeting

December 13th, 2017, 6:30 P.M.

Boise State University, Student Union Building, North Lounge Boise, ID


In attendance: Andrew Chumich, Bryan Weeks, Sammi Lowman, Rachel Beukelman, Matthew Mattefs, Sarah Beukelman, Matt Roesch, Matt Lord, Brady Walters, Jacob Haun, Kent Kiser, Dave McKerracher, Hector Quiroz, William Smith, Emily Erickson, Ashley Prince, Riley Thomason, Alex Neiwirth, Christine Baylis, Ty Stanley-Kershner, Kenneth Freeman, Robert Stevahn, Alexander Olsen, Chris Villalobos.

Dave McKerracher called meeting to order and welcomed everyone at 6:45pm.

Dave McKerracher introduced himself as well as the New Symbolic Order in part of hosting the meeting for DSA. Dave also called for collaborative reading sessions between the NSO and DSA.

Andrew Chumich gave an introduction for the DSA and explained the DSA is a movement and network of individuals for direct action. Andrew explained the importance of knowing what socialism really is and called for individuals in the attending body to rise up and fill leadership roles as in the purpose of the meeting.

Robert Stevahn explained the process of consensus voting. Examples of of Tent City, and Occupy Boise were cited. Consensus voting was explained to be important for left solidarity.

The body conferred in table groups with each other and proposed ideas for action in the DSA. Ideas Suggested:

  • Medicaid Expansion
  • Minimum Wage Change
  • Ranked Preferential -Voting in Local Politics
  • Unfair Housing/Homelessness Resolution
  • Education on Immigrant Rights
  • Protesting CVS Building
  • Food Not Bombs

Vote for one political action and one community service action was taken.

Medicaid Expansion won vote for political action.

Vote for community service action: No clear winner. TBD at next meeting
